Perspective is relevant
Through art, we see the world beyond the limitations of sight alone. Art adds imagination and unbound possibilities to our existence and what we perceive in the physical realm that surrounds us every moment of every day.

Paleolithic man at the dawn of time marked and scratched images of his daily life on rocks, native inhabitants and travelers around the world and throughout time have used a multitude of techniques to record history and share stories, and the arts in general have been society's medium for expression. As an artist, I search for that which speaks to me emotionally, and my hope is that my artwork speaks to you personally, adding value to your own thoughts with each viewing..
About the Artist
Native to and resident of San Diego California, Rustin has always enjoyed the mild Mediterranean climate and vast diversity found throughout Southern California, and often wanders the local mountains and coastline in search of inspiration. His preferred medium is oil, attempting to capture and express a moment inspired by the peaceful serenity in a landscape, the mood and flow in a seascape, expression or suggestion within a portrait or figure, or perhaps combining facets of each to create and tell a story.
Prior to painting, Rustin dabbled in black-and-white photography, where he was fascinated capturing a moment on film and manipulating it in the darkroom to create a mood or statement. However, he found it to be limiting with respect to his own creative needs and eventually decided to seek an alternative medium. Around the turn of the millennium, he began taking evening classes emphasizing landscapes and portraits, studying under Mr. Jack Jordan, a well known and respected artist and illustrator with over four decades of experience at that time. For the next 15 or so years, Rustin continued to be mentored by Mr. Jordan, working to better understand and master the key elements of composition, color theory, and value differential, as well as supporting elements including frame construction, sketchbooking, planning featured artist shows, and balancing the business of with the passion for creating art.
Today, Rustin’s focus remains with oil, but has also expanded to acrylics depending on the subject and desired effect he is trying to capture. He is featured locally in San Diego, California at Southwestern Artists in Studio 23 Spanish Village located in Balboa Park, and Foothills Art Association at Porter Hall in La Mesa. Online, his work can be viewed on Facebook by liking or subscribing to Rustin Holec Studio, and on Instagram by subscribing to creartivexpressions. His acrylics are offered on Etsy listed under ArtbyRustin, and he is available for commissions and pet portraits, and has once again resumed offering demonstrations, group workshops, and individual classes.
Artist’s Statement
Regardless of the subject, painting is not merely copying or a series of random brush strokes. It is a means of expression through thoughtful creation, fueled by imagination, passion, desire and mood. It is a portal through which to escape, explore, and find oneself.
For the artist, it is his or her legacy through which current and future explorers are invited to visit and dream. Each piece of art, each brush stroke is a statement; a thought the artist felt strongly enough had value to put out there. The intensity or strength of that value might be expressed through the temperature of color, the confidence in robust impasto; it could be a whisper of sensuality heard through the soft blending of brush strokes, something mysterious and hidden within a shadow; or changes in light values. And although the artist's intent may differ from what the viewer discovers, the important thing is that the viewer open up his or her mind to that piece of art so as to experience and interpret individual perceptions, to find meaning, stir emotion, spark inspiration, and allow the mind to roam to destinations unknown.
